Acne scars are the result of breakouts, where inflammation damages the walls of the pore. When this happens, the body responds by generating new collagen. Sometimes, this collagen doesn’t create smooth, even-toned skin as it heals. The result is acne scars.
There are many different types of acne scars, and they can be difficult to get rid of with products or other conventional treatments. Some are textured and can cause pitted scars (called ice pick scars) in the skin. Dermal fillers are one way to fill in pockmark scars and create a smoother look. Treatments like IPL or chemical peels can be combined with fillers to address redness and achieve clearer skin.
Acne scar treatment can vary from person to person, depending on the type of acne and extensiveness of the scarring.
- Ice pick scars
- Boxcar scars
- Atrophic scars
- Depressed scars
Red or pigmented acne scars can’t be treated with fillers and will require other options like chemical peels or microneedling. If you have scars that are a mixture of pigment and texture, you may need a combination approach. Our skincare specialists can give you the best idea of what you can expect from acne scar treatment during your appointment.
Acne scar filler treatments are quick and easy. Most patients don’t require a topical anesthetic, but your injector can supply one if needed. You’ll select the right dermal filler for you based on your goals and needs. Once you’re ready, the filler is placed in the skin using a very fine needle – this is done very carefully and with very small injections in each scar to create a smoother, more even look to the skin. Sometimes, filler treatments can be combined with other skincare treatments to help address redness as well.

“My daughter is seeing Dylan, the PA, and he is awesome. He talks to her and lets her give answers about her skin which I appreciate. He also has been very conservative yet effective with his treatment. She is thrilled with how clear her skin has become. I plan to take any of my kids that are struggling with acne to see Dylan when the time comes."
“Very efficient and friendly clinic. I felt safe and well cared for by Dr. Hamblin and his team. It is really nice to have a local Dermatology clinic, especially such a high-quality one!"
“Dylan at Hamblin Dermatology was great! My first visit here was just for a skin check. He took his time for addressing my concerns and educating me and office staff were welcoming, helpful, and pleasant. Definitely a 5-star experience and recommendation."
After filler treatment, it’s important to follow your specific directions. You may experience some sensitivity, which can be managed with ice packs. Avoid taking blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen since this can cause bruising. You’ll need to avoid exercise, sweating, or hot environments for the first 24-48 hours after treatment, and make sure to wear SPF 30+ daily. Although you’ll see noticeable results right after your session, it can take time for your final results to emerge as the product settles. Depending on your filler, you can enjoy results for as much as 18 months before returning for re-treatment.
Dermal fillers can be a great way to restore your skin and your confidence after acne breakouts. To learn more about your options for acne scars, contact Hamblin Dermatology by calling or filling out our online contact form.
