Maintenance Steps
Taking care of your skin after skin cancer treatment is an extremely important step. Our team will make sure you have detailed aftercare instructions to follow.
- Regularly clean the area with warm, soapy water and pat dry
- Avoid baths or otherwise soaking the wound until it’s healed
- Keep the wound covered with antibiotic ointment and a bandage
- Apply Vaseline or silicone gel to the area to help scarring fade
- Be vigilant for signs of infection like redness, swelling, or sensitivity
Preventing Skin Cancer
It’s especially important to prevent skin cancer from recurring after going through treatment. Perform skin self-checks regularly and meet with your dermatologist to keep an eye on any spots. Your dermatologist can recommend how often to return for a professional skin check after going through treatment.
You can prevent skin cancer by wearing sunscreen (SPF 30+) every day and avoiding sunlight during the middle part of the day. It can also help to wear UV protective clothing and items like hats and sunglasses. Experiencing sunburn can raise your risk of developing skin cancer, so avoid sunburn as much as possible.
Finally, if you tan outdoors or visit tanning booths, stop immediately.
